     The Mashpee Wampanoag Timeline


1620 Pilgrims land in Plymouth. Squanto, stays with them for 1 ˝ yrs. Helped them survive during harsh winters, teaching them to be farmers, fishermen & hunters

1621 Massasoit signs peace treaty with English stating they will respect and not harm one another.

1675 Massasoit dies, two sons Wamsutta (Alexander) & Metacomet (Philip). Philip becomes Sachem of Wampanoag. King Philip wages war with English; he leads Eastern Natives in an effort to push settlers “back to the sea.” He loses the battle because his people reveal his hiding place. King Philip is murdered, beheaded, his family enslaved.

1763 Massachusetts legislature allow Mashpee Wampanoag limited self-governance.

1790 President George Washington signs Trade & Non-Intercourse Act requiring federal government to approve land being sold or transferred.
