WuneekeesuqNutawâm (Greetings to my Tribal Community),
I am writing to update you on a recent development in our efforts to provide economic development for our Tribe through a destination resort casino. The Tribal Council proposes to create by Ordinance the “Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Gaming Authority.” Below, please see a few facts about the Gaming Authority.
- The Gaming Authority would be an agency of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribal government.
- The Gaming Authority would report directly to the Tribal Council.
- Typical of large tribal gaming facilities, the Gaming Authority would be created to develop, own and operate the Tribe’s gaming and related facilities for the benefit of the Tribe.
- The Gaming Authority would help protect the Tribe from liabilities that arise out of the gaming business, including borrowings for the hundreds of millions of dollars anticipated to be spent on the gaming facilities.
- The Gaming Authority would be governed by a 5 member Board of Directors.
- The Board of Directors would be charged with being responsive to the day-to-day business needs of a multi-million dollar gaming operation.
- It is proposed that the Board of Directors would consist of the Tribal Chairman and Treasurer, plus three other Tribal Council members chosen by the Tribal Council.
The full ordinance is available for your review at mashpeewampanoagtribe.com or at the Mashpee Wampanoag tribal offices.
