February 8, 2009

Cedric Cromwell was elected Tribal Chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe on February 8, 2009. Mr. Cromwell, who has served on the Tribal Council for eight years, was elected with almost 60 percent of the vote in a three-person race. Nearly 600 people voted, the most in the Tribe's history.

"I am honored and humbled by the support of the Mashpee Wampanoag people. We now have an opportunity to restore integrity to our government, unity to our tribe and good will among our neighbors," Cromwell stated. "I look forward to getting to work."

The newly elected members of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal government are as follows:

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council was established in 1972 to maintain the culture, traditions, and the ancestral homelands of the Mashpee Wampanoag people, and to establish a formal governing body for the Tribe. The Mashpee Wampanoag received federal recognition in 2007.
